Introduction

Hello everyone! I’m Simone Carter and this is Dustin Beard, our editor.

My name is Stephen Danny Downs and I started this story about a week ago. I’m so glad that you decided to stop by and listen to my story. I’m even more thrilled that you found my work to be interesting enough to be included here on the blog!

My name is Dustin and I’m a writer myself. I like to write because it allows me to tell stories that haven’t been told before. I’ve always been a very creative person. Before I started writing my own stories I used to draw all the time, which lead me to wanting to become an artist. That eventually turned into me becoming a musician. I’m very passionate about music and I am currently on a journey to write my first novel.

What Makes This Story So Emotional?

The main character has his entire life and future ahead of him. At twenty-five, he is a high school teacher. He is a loving and caring person who cares deeply about his students, loves his family, and loves to laugh. He has a bright future.

One day, a freak accident occurs that leaves him with brain damage. It leaves him a disoriented and hopeless person, living in constant fear of the future and its possibilities. It makes him feel the same emptiness, hopelessness, and despair that his main character in “All the Pretty Horses” felt. This is why the story is so emotional!

How Did The Author Create This Heart-Wrenching Story?

There are two people who created this story for us. On one hand, we have Bob Phillips. He is a teacher, a husband, and a father of three.

Media and the Tragedy of Stephen Danny Downs

Beside being a good story, what makes this story of despair and hopelessness so poignant?

Brigid Hemmingway: I think that Stephen’s powerlessness is a great representation of how people are dealt with when facing tragedy. He is helpless to stop the crime and is expected to live with it on a daily basis. The dark nature of it is meant to highlight this part of life: to deal with disaster and sadness by limiting our options and trying to make ourselves feel better, for example by developing a compulsive relationship with our technology.

Which elements of the story were the hardest for you to nail down?

BCH: The hopelessness Stephen feels was always going to be a big element of the story.

Conclusion

So there you have it! Many suggestions for short stories that would make great IndieGoGo projects. We hope you liked our list, and we hope you’ll consider one of these for your project!

We’ll be back next week with a new post!

Thanks for reading!

Matt and Kat!
